Gallbladder removal carries a small risk of bile duct injury, though this is rare, and a small proportion of cases may require conversion to a more open approach if unexpected difficulties arise. Before recommending surgery, our team confirms the diagnosis with ultrasound or other imaging and checks liver and bile duct function through blood tests. Digestion is not significantly affected for most people afterward, since bile simply flows more directly from the liver into the intestine. A small number of patients notice temporary changes in bowel habits, which usually settle within a few weeks.
Recovery after robotic gallbladder surgery is usually quick, and many patients go home the same day or after a single night in hospital.
